Rumukia, Kenya AA

Washed SL28, SL34

Cultivated 5000 feet above sea level on the fertile red loam volcanic soils in the foothills of Mt. Kenya and Aberdare ranges in the Nyeri district, Rumukia is a group of 843 small scale farmers that have grouped together and collectively raise the quality of their coffee through evolving quality standards and extensive training. The farmer’s average just 250 trees each, and no farm is larger than 2 acres, affording the farmers greater control over the quality of coffee produced. On the same day the coffee cherry—mostly SL28 and SL34 varietal—is harvested, it is also transported to Tambaya, the wet processing factory, where it is weighed, recorded and pulped. Tambaya offers credit facilities for education and medical emergencies, credit for farm inputs, and field days to train farmers, along with collaboration from input suppliers and the Ministry of Agriculture. The coffee is sweet and tart, with a fragrance of green jolly rancher, and the taste of kumquat, pineapple, and orange soda.
